Horsey question: I am going to meet my first horse on thurs, any advice?

I really like horses but they do scare me. a friend of mine got crushed by one once and nearly died, so I am a bit nervous. Another friend is taking me to meet her horse so any tips to put my cowardly mind at rest would be helpful. I really want to enjoy and am excited, but also worried, I want to get bitten by the bug (not the horse)Horsey question: I am going to meet my first horse on thurs, any advice?
when you go up to him, be sure not to raise your hands or anything in front of his face. some horses kind of freak out if you do. you can also take some pieces of carrots and give them to him. be sure to pet him and he will love you. NEVER WALK BEHIND HIM IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HE WILL ACT!!Horsey question: I am going to meet my first horse on thurs, any advice?
I think this will actually make your decision a bit easier. If the horse makes you feel nervous don't buy it. I bought the sweetest horse ever but she still turned out to be a challenge and going from riding school horses to experienced horses is a whole new world. Taking time to buy a horse that makes you feel safe when your around it is time well spent and is better than spending money on training bills and other sorts later. Go for a horse thats easier than what you think you can handle because you can never be prepared for having your own horse because a lot of responsability lies on you. I don't want to make you more nervous just if you buy a horse and you think its a bit of a challenge for you but itll be ok it probably wont be you will just get put off riding and buying a horse suitable for you and sound will strengthen your liking for horses.
when you go just let the horse sniff your hand a little like you would to a strange dog. then ask your friend if she has any treats and see if you can give the horse one. then just start by petting him on the neck or somewhere where you feel comfortable. ask the owner if they know where his *sweet*spot is and scratch him there. Also horses can sense what your feeling(nervous scared excited etc..) so if the horse is a calm all around horse he will sense that you are scared and make sure he is extra careful around you. however if he is a young and rambonctious horse he may feed of you fear and become jittery and flighty himself so ask the owner what he is like and make sure the owner is there with you. you'll be fine horses are great animals. there is a place down where i live called s.m.i.l.e.s. and they are a horse farm. at this farm disabled kids and kids that were abused and dont talk or any kid can come and pet, brush and or ride the horses. They use the horses as therapy and it works. there was this girl who had a disability where she couldnt talk well so she just didnt talk. this lasted a couple of years and so they took her there and she started talking like there was no tomorrow, and now her language has improved. well i hope you have fun!!!!!
Horses love mints...or any other treat. Speak softly and make no sudden movements that might spook the horse into attacking. Don't be rough with it.

Eventually...they'll get used to you and it'll show that they like you! If you're nasty to them at any time...they'll remember and will either ignore you, run away or attack. Be nice and they'll love you.

You'll be fine. They're quite nice animals.
Take a packet of Polo mints with you, it will be your friend for life.
